Why Upholstery Moved Off the Die and the Hand Knife

An upholstered seat is never one material. A cover panel is leather or fabric; under it sit foam, wadding and a backing scrim — and traditionally each was cut a different way: a steel-rule die for volume shapes, a hand knife for everything else. A die is fast but every design change means a new die with its cost and lead time; a hand knife is flexible but slow and never twice the same.

A digital knife table replaces both. The C-series is a vibrating-knife cutter with a camera, a zoned vacuum bed and a conveyor: it nests leather around its defects, locks a printed check to its repeat, and shears foam full-depth — then labels every panel in kit order for the sew line. Where upholstery differs from the raw material pages. Cutting leather hides as your material — grading tannage and thickness — rather than upholstery as your product? That is the leather cutting machine. Plain woven textile by the roll is the fabric cutting machine. This page is the upholstered part — where hide, foam and backing are cut from one nest and kitted for the sew line, which is a different machine job from cutting any one of them on its own.

Three things that catch first-time buyers

  • Hide yield is where the money is. On leather the material dwarfs the machine cost, so the camera nesting around range defects and brand marks — not raw cutting speed — is what pays the machine back. Judge a demo on yield off a real hide, not on how fast it cuts a rectangle.
  • Registration decides whether printed trim is scrap. A plaid, a printed check or perforated leather has to be cut to the print, not just to a nested outline. Without camera registration the panels sew up misaligned — and on a patterned suite that is the whole job scrapped, not one panel.
  • Foam depth and hold-down, not the blade, decide the cushion. Soft foam drifts and compresses; a table that shears full-depth on vacuum holds the cushion to size. A machine specced only on sheet-goods speed will undersize a thick foam bun — check it on your actual foam and thickness, per performance-fabric and foam supplier data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one machine cut leather, foam and fabric?

Yes — that is the whole point of a digital knife table for upholstery. The same head cuts a leather cover panel, the foam under it and the backing scrim, and a nesting program lays all three out for one job. The blade and settings change per material automatically; you do not need a separate machine for each layer.

How does it handle printed or checked upholstery fabric?

A camera registers to the print before it cuts, so a plaid, a printed check or perforated leather is cut in register with the pattern rather than to a blind outline. On patterned suites this is the difference between panels that match at the seam and a scrapped set — it is the feature to insist on for automotive and high-end furniture trim.

Won’t an oscillating knife compress seat foam?

No. Zone vacuum holds the foam flat and the powered blade shears it full-depth in a single pass, so the cushion comes out to the CAD size instead of undersized. A saw or a dull blade compresses and drifts; a shearing knife on vacuum holds the dimension, which is what keeps a cushion firm into the corners.

Why not laser-cut upholstery leather and coated fabric?

Because heat ruins the face. A laser scorches leather grain, carbonises the coating on marine and automotive fabric, and releases fumes from the matrix — and it cannot cut foam without melting it. A cold knife adds no heat, so the grain, the coating and the bond line all survive. This is the same reason marine canvas is never laser cut.

Does it nest around defects and brand marks on a hide?

Yes. The camera maps each hide and the nesting software places panels around range defects, holes and brand marks, so scrap goes to offcut areas rather than into a cover panel. On leather, where the material costs far more than the machine time, that yield is what pays the machine back.

How much does an upholstery cutting machine cost?
