What Is a CNC Leather Cutting Machine?
A CNC leather cutting machine is an automated flatbed system that uses a high-frequency computer numerical control program to drive an oscillating knife through leather and other flexible sheet materials. The blade vibrates vertically tens of thousands of times per minute, slicing along a programmed path with machining accuracy held within 0.1 mm — replacing manual knives, clicker presses and steel-rule dies for both custom and batch production.
Unlike a laser, the oscillating knife is a cold-cutting process: it leaves no burnt edge, no discoloration and no odor, fully preserving the natural grain and color of genuine leather. That makes it the preferred choice for automotive interiors, bags, footwear and furniture upholstery, where edge quality and material appearance are non-negotiable.
Why an Oscillating Knife for Leather — Not a Laser
Lasers cut leather by burning through it. On genuine leather that means scorched brown edges, a persistent smell and heat-affected color. An oscillating knife cuts mechanically and cold, so the finished edge looks and feels like the material itself.

Oscillating Knife Cutting, Step by Step
A servo-driven head carries an oscillating knife (EOT/OET tangential tool) over a vacuum-adsorption flatbed. The CNC system controls the cutting trajectory and depth while the blade oscillates vertically at high frequency, slicing the leather without pulling or distorting it. A CCD camera follows printed edges or registration marks for precise contour and print-to-cut alignment, and belt auto-feed advances the material for continuous, roll-to-sheet production.

How thick of leather can this machine cut?
The oscillating knife cuts soft and genuine leather in a single pass and handles rigid stacked material up to ≤50 mm on the C2516T. Exact depth depends on hardness, blade choice and whether you cut single- or multi-layer — send us your material and we will confirm the setup.
Oscillating knife vs laser for leather — which should I choose?
For genuine leather, choose the oscillating knife. It is a cold-cutting process, so edges stay clean with no scorching, discoloration or burnt smell, and the natural grain is preserved. Lasers burn the edge and are generally unsuitable for real leather. A laser only makes sense for some thin synthetic sheets where an engraved look is acceptable.
Can it cut multiple layers of leather at once?
Yes. For synthetic leather and thinner hides you can stack layers and cut them in one pass, which is common in footwear and bag production. Layer count depends on material thickness and density; we validate the maximum stack during machine testing with your samples.
Which leather types does it handle?
Genuine leather (cowhide, sheepskin, full-grain, split), PU leather, PVC synthetic leather, microfiber leather and bonded/recycled leather. The same platform also cuts felt, foam, rubber and EVA if your production mixes materials.
What CAD files and software does it use?
The machine accepts HPGL, PLT and DXF files and ships with MNT control software; automatic typesetting/nesting to maximize hide utilization is available as an option. It integrates with standard leather CAD and pattern systems.
