The Basics

What Is a Digital Die Cutting Machine?

A digital die cutting machine cuts shapes from a digital file with a computer-controlled knife, so it needs no physical steel-rule die. It cuts, creases and kiss-cuts gaskets, foam, rubber, cardboard, labels and other flexible materials in one setup.

Because there is no die to build, a new design goes from drawing to cut part the same day — which is why die-less digital cutting suits samples, short runs and frequently changing shapes, where tooling cost and lead time would otherwise dominate.

Traditional die cutting relies on a physical die; a digital cutter skips it entirely. See the full MNT digital cutting machine range behind this process.

Nowhere is die-less cutting moving faster than in labels and short-run packaging: the self-adhesive label industry increasingly runs digital label die cutting — kiss-cutting pressure-sensitive stock on the roll with registration to print — because a steel-rule die makes no sense for a job that changes every week.

Coming from print and signage rather than from converting? The same platform is sold into print finishing as a flatbed cutter — same gantry, same vacuum bed, but the buying question there is camera registration to printed artwork rather than replacing a steel-rule die. Materials a Digital Die Cutter Handles

One machine covers the soft, flexible stock that die cutting is built for — from gasket rubber to packaging board.

Automotive & Machinery Seals

Gasket & Sealing Materials

Rubber, cork, fibre and foam gaskets cut clean and repeatable, with no die to build for each new profile.

Acrylic, ACM, PVC and timber on one router bed

Foam & Cushioning

EVA, PE and PU foam cut and kiss-cut for inserts, packaging cushioning and protective padding.

Packaging Board & Cartons

Corrugated, folding carton and cardboard cut and creased for boxes, displays and packaging samples.

Packaging, Gaskets and Labels You Can Die-Cut Without Tooling

Die-less cutting produces the short-run, made-to-file parts that steel-rule dies make slow and costly.

Die-Less vs Steel-Rule Die

Digital Die Cutting vs Traditional Steel-Rule Die

A steel-rule die is fast and cheap once you are running thousands of one fixed shape. A digital die cutter wins everywhere before that — no tooling, any shape, same-day changes.

Factor Digital die cutting (die-less) Steel-rule die
Tooling None — cuts from file A die built per shape
New / changed design Same day, just edit the file New die, days of lead time
Best volume Samples, short and medium runs High volume (1,000+), one shape
Features Cut, crease, kiss-cut, part-depth Through-cut in a single strike
Setup cost Low, no die Die cost per shape

Most sample rooms and short-run converters are better served by a die-less digital cutter; steel-rule dies pay off only at high volume on a fixed shape.

For thick gasket stock at high volume on one fixed shape, a steel-rule die still earns its place; for everything shorter or changing, die-less digital cutting wins.

Why MNT

Why Choose MNT for Die-Less Die Cutting

Distributor or OEM partner? Territory, spare-parts commitment and technical training are what decide whether a machine is worth carrying. Talk to us about partnership.

No Dies, No Tooling Wait

  • Cut straight from your file — zero steel-rule dies to build or store
  • A new or changed shape is cutting the same day, not days later
  • No per-shape tooling cost, so short runs and samples stay economical
  • For distributors: your buyer is a printer or converter moving die-cutting in-house — the budget already exists as an outsourcing line item, so you are replacing a cost, not selling a new one

One Machine: Cut, Crease & Kiss-Cut

  • Oscillating knife, creasing wheel and kiss-cut tools in one setup
  • Full cut, part-depth kiss-cut and fold creases without changing machines
  • Handles gaskets, foam, board and labels on the same table
  • For distributors: spare-parts commitment, territory and technical training are the three things that decide whether a machine is worth carrying — all three are set out on our partnership page

FAQ

FAQ about Digital Die Cutting Machines

What is a digital die cutting machine?

It is a computer-controlled cutter that die-cuts shapes straight from a digital file, with no physical steel-rule die. An oscillating knife, creasing and kiss-cut tools cut gaskets, foam, packaging and labels in one setup.

How much does a digital die cutting machine cost?

Price depends on working size, the tool set (knife, creasing, kiss-cut) and automation level. There is no per-shape die cost — that is where die-less cutting saves money on samples and short runs. Send your material, size and volume and we quote your exact configuration within 24 hours.

Digital die cutting vs a steel-rule die — which is cheaper?

For samples, short and medium runs, die-less digital cutting is cheaper because there is no die to build for each shape. A steel-rule die only wins at high volume (roughly 1,000+ units) of one fixed shape.

Can it cut rubber and foam gaskets?

Yes. It cuts rubber, cork, fibre and foam gaskets from your drawing, including changing shapes and short runs, without building a die for each profile.

Do I need a die or any tooling?

No. The machine cuts from your file, so there is no die to build, pay for or store. A new or revised shape is cutting the same day.

What materials and thickness can it cut?

Gaskets, foam, rubber, cardboard, folding carton, labels, vinyl and other flexible materials. Achievable thickness depends on the tool and material — send your stock and we confirm with a sample cut.

Can it do short runs and one-off samples?

Yes — that is its strongest use. With no die and an MOQ of one machine, it turns a single new design into a cut part the same day, ideal for sample rooms and short-run converters.

Can it kiss-cut labels and stickers on the roll?

Yes — kiss-cutting pressure-sensitive label and sticker stock is one of the most common digital die cutting jobs. The blade cuts the face material and adhesive but not the release liner, so the labels peel cleanly off the backing, and a camera registers each cut to the printed artwork. For roll-fed label die cutting the C4235 prints, registers and kiss-cuts in one pass; on a flatbed the C6090 handles sheet labels and short runs. No die, so a new label or sticker shape is a file, not tooling — which is why short-run and variable-data label work has moved to digital.
