Machine specifications compared. Foam board work is mostly about what happens at the edge, not the depth. A through-cut on 5 mm board is trivial; a clean V-cut fold or a crease that does not crack the liner is not, and those tools are standard only on the C6090. Above a 2500 × 1600 mm sheet the C3232 is the only table that takes the board whole.

Paper-Faced Foam Core Board
- Formats: Standard 3–10 mm display board, sheets to 1600 × 2500 mm
- Watch out: A dull or hot blade tears the paper liner and leaves a furred edge that shows on a mounted print — and it is the visible edge of the finished piece
- How we cut it: The blade cuts liner and polystyrene core in a single pass, leaving a square edge that mounts flush without sanding
PVC Foam Board (Forex / Sintra)
- Formats: Rigid expanded PVC, 3–20 mm
- Watch out: PVC must never meet a laser — it releases chlorine gas that corrodes optics and frame, and leaves a melted, discoloured cut face
- How we cut it: A cold knife avoids all of it: no extraction upgrade, no fume risk, no discoloured edge
Gatorboard / Gatorfoam
- Formats: Wood-fibre-faced board, 3–25 mm, full 4 × 8 ft sheets
- Watch out: The fibre facing dulls hand blades within a few sheets, so edge quality drifts across a run and the last panels do not match the first

ACM & Composite Panels
- Formats: Aluminium composite and mixed-substrate board, 2–6 mm
- Watch out: A knife cannot cut the aluminium skin, so this job normally moves to a second machine and a second setup — and a second setup is a second registration error

Why a Cold Knife Wins on Foam Board
Every other method fails somewhere on foam board. A laser melts the polystyrene core and, on PVC board, releases chlorine gas that corrodes the machine. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best tool to cut foam core with?
A CNC oscillating knife is the best tool for production foam core cutting. It cuts cold, so the polystyrene core never melts and the paper liner stays intact, and it repeats the same shape to ±0.1 mm. A hand blade is fine for one board; past a few dozen pieces the edge quality and the operator both give out.
How do you cut foam core board without crushing the edge?
Crushed edges come from pressing a blunt blade down through the board. An oscillating knife vibrates thousands of times a second and parts the foam instead of pushing it, and the vacuum bed holds the sheet flat so it cannot lift or compress. Set the blade to cut roughly 1 mm into the sacrificial layer and the bottom liner cuts clean too.
Can you cut foam core with a hot wire cutter?
No — a hot wire melts through polystyrene but cannot cut the paper or PVC faces, so it tears the liner and leaves a scorched, ragged edge. Hot wire suits bare EPS/XPS block, not faced display board.
Can a laser cut foam core board?
A laser will cut it, but it melts the polystyrene core into a rounded, glossy edge and yellows the paper face. On PVC foam board a laser is worse than untidy: PVC releases chlorine gas that corrodes the optics and the frame. Both problems disappear with a cold knife.
How thick a board can it cut?
2–30 mm depending on the material — typically 3–10 mm paper-faced foam core, up to 20 mm expanded PVC, and up to 30 mm on soft boards in a single pass. Send a sample sheet and we confirm the exact blade and setup for your stock.
